Mr Jozef Syktus - "Climate modelling in Australia: From global climate models for the next IPCC assessment report to regional high-resolution climate modelling to provide climate services"
20 September 2024 11:00am–12:00pm
The Speaker:
Jozef Syktus is a professorial research fellow at the School of the Environment, University of Queensland. He was seconded from UQ to the Queensland Government in 2015 and is working closely with Climate Projections and Services group at the Department of Energy and Climate on delivering regional projections for Queensland. His work involves using global and regional climate models to produce climate projections and evaluate impacts of climate change on projected change in climate extremes such as drought, heat waves, fire weather and tropical cyclones. He has developed Australia’s contribution to CMIP5 using global models and more recently CORDEX CMIP5 and CMIP6 regional downscaled projections.
Abstract:
The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) coordinates the global climate modelling efforts providing climate projections for the past, present and future which are a key component of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment reports that come out every 7 years. The CMIP7 climate models will underpin the development of the IPCC 7th Assessment Report that will be released in late 2029 and provide input to the 2028 second Global Stocktake. This presentation will describe details of the development of new emission scenarios, experimental protocols and Australia’s modelling contribution to CMIP7.
Additionally, there has been several international initiatives focusing on the development and testing of high resolution global and regional climate simulations to provide high resolution climate data, information and knowledge to assist government and industry decision making. The Australian Climate Service has recently been established to provide improved data, intelligence and expert advice on climate risks and impacts. A National Partnership for Climate Projections has been established to coordinate the work of state and territory governments, CSIRO, BoM and universities to develop and update a set of national downscaled climate projections.
