Our past and present students run and are members of a range of societies and committees.

By joining up, you’ll enhance your studies with the School of the Environment and get the chance to network as you transition to working life.

Geography and Environmental Management Society

The Geography and Environmental Management Society (GEMS) is a student-run society that aims to connect students, academics and industry.

All students with an interest in geography, environmental management and planning are welcome to join.

We deliver professional and social events throughout the semester and help prepare UQ students for sustainable futures.

Our varied events include:

barbecues and pancake days
trivia nights
sporting events, including touch rugby league, rugby and netball matches
environmental volunteering, such as tree-planting days
trips to locations including Moreton Island, Noosa National Park and Mount Warning
research seminars
industry nights.

Our $10 membership fee is tax deductible and goes towards discounted activities.

We’re affiliated with and supported by the UQ Union.

Idalia Recovery Organisation of Students

Idalia Recovery Organisation of Students (iROOS) organises several trips a year to national parks and reserves across Queensland to help local rangers with flora and fauna surveying, and maintenance.

Providing hands-on practical field experience and the chance to apply management skills taught in class, these trips have real-world application in conservation careers.

iROOS was formed by ecology and environmental science students in 2007 after they identified a chance to contribute on a field trip to Idalia National Park, near Blackall in western Queensland.

The park is home to yellow-footed and bridled nailtail wallabies, and for more than a decade iROOS members have helped monitor these and other macro pod species around waterholes. Volunteers have also developed data sets that are relevant to local conservation challenges.

iROOS has since expanded its program to other parks around Queensland.

We are supported by our School, and Bush Heritage Australia.

UQ Geoscience Society

We’re a student-run organisation open to current, past and prospective UQ geology students and staff.

We run a range of regular social and networking events, and provide School- and course-specific information.

Our activities include:

evening balls.

We also keep our members informed about:

course information
equipment and field trips
careers fairs
employment opportunities.

UQ Health & Safety Student Society

The UQ Health & Safety Student Society (HSSS) is run by OHS students, for OHS students.

We aim to be a forum that allows all BOHSSc (Hons) and MOHSSc students at UQ a chance to network.

We stage regular social events, including pub crawls and Harry Potter evenings, as well as networking events such as Safe Work Month Breakfasts and industry evenings with representatives from local and overseas companies.

Student Consultative Committee

The Student Consultative Committee is a forum led by students to gather feedback and suggestions for School operations, facilities and course development. All items raised by students are treated as confidential.

The committee meets regularly throughout semester times. All students are welcome to join the meetings.
