Project title:

Bottlenose Dolphins in Human Care: evaluating the role of structured daily activities in animal welfare

Project description:

The major aim of this research is to investigate husbandry approaches that may enhance the welfare of bottlenose dolphins in human care. Using an integrated approach combining behavioural observations, endocrine sampling and cognitive studies, I hope to gain a better understanding of how dolphins perceive and react to the scheduled performance and human interactive activities in their daily lives. Influenced by increasing public concern for cetacean welfare in zoos and aquaria, this project will investigate the impact of live dolphin presentations/public shows on their behaviour, stress physiology, and general well-being.
