Project title:

Metabolic changes underneath the antimicrobial resistance in bacteria

Project description:

Resistance to antibiotics contributes to decrease in bacterial fitness in the absence of the drug known as “cost of resistance”. The actual representation of such phenomenon would be lower growth rate of resistant mutants to that of sensitive wild type in antibiotic-free systems. However, resistant strains remain prevailing in the environment despite undergoing major fitness costs. The reason relies on the fact that the emergence of antibiotic resistance accompanies with a general metabolic burden leading to changes in basic cellular functionality of bacteria. I am investigating the metabolic repertoire of antimicrobial resistant bacteria conferring to their coexistence and evolution.
