Project title:
Investigating parrotfish feeding ecology and bioerosion to inform carbonate budgets
Project description:
On the Great Barrier Reef, carbonate bioerosion is primarily driven by parrotfish grazing, but our understanding of this process is mostly limited to shallow reef environments. To better understand how bioerosion and carbonate budgets change across a reef, I am 1) quantifying bioerosion along a depth gradient by observing parrotfish behaviour and feeding, 2) investigating potential drivers of feeding selectivity, and 3) investigating productivity and availability of parrotfish food items. Outcomes of this work include a better understanding of parrotfish feeding ecology, as well as improved parameterisation of bioerosion within carbonate budget models.
