How will climate change impact agriculture in Queensland?
Theme: Geography
Description: Climate change is expected to have a significant impact on agriculture, leading to shifting cropping patterns and the abandonment of some crops, and the shift to other crops. Previous work in Queensland has suggested that while some crops, such as sorghum, may do well, other crops, such as wheat, may see declines in production. The aim of this project is to use high-resolution climate data for Queensland and crop-climate relationships (i.e., FAO ECOcrop or growing degree days) to examine the impact of climate change on crops in a case-study region of Queensland.
Additional Information: This is an opportunity to do a joint research project between UQ and the Climate Projections & Services team at the Queensland Department of Energy and Climate. The student should have a background in geography/climate science/physics/maths or agricultural sciences and should have some knowledge of coding or a willingness to learn.
