Theme: Geography

Description: Climate models produce enormous amounts of data that can be difficult to explain and share with non-scientists. Scientists need to communicate this information in way that people can understand, so they can adapt to climate change, and also so they don’t lose hope and ‘tune out’. Ed Hawkins ‘climate stripes’, ‘causal chains’, and the Queensland governments ‘Future Climate Dashboard’ are some examples of how climate change information can be communicated to non-experts.

Additional Information: The aim of this research is to examine climate communication strategies nationally and internationally, and then produce a case study communication example for climate change in Queensland. This is an opportunity to do a joint research project between UQ and the Climate Projections & Services team at the Queensland Department of Energy and Climate. The student should have a background in geography/climate science and should have some knowledge of coding or a willingness to learn.
