Project title:
Human and ecosystem health benefits through integrated watershed management in Pacific Islands
Project description:
Low coverage of improved drinking water and sanitation in Pacific Islands leaves local populations heavily reliant on the safety and security of unprotected water sources and vulnerable to water-borne diseases. Inadequate sanitation infrastructure and land-use change has also put large areas of Pacific Island marine environments at risk from land-based pollution runoff. This research aims to use a cross-sectoral approach to assess and optimise management of Pacific Island watersheds to deliver benefits for both human and ecosystem health. In close collaboration with The Wildlife Conservation Society-Fiji, the project will focus on Fiji to develop a watershed management framework that will deliver improvements in water safety, disease prevention and marine ecosystem health.
