Chasing Wi-Fi and Sunshine: Analysing the Push and Pull of Digital Nomad Mobilities
Project description:
The rise of remote work has enabled an increasing number of professionals to combine location-independent careers with travel — a phenomenon known as digital nomadism. Digital nomads defy conventional categories of tourist, migrant, and worker, posing new challenges for cities, housing markets, and the policy frameworks that are yet to fully adapt to these emerging forms of mobility. This research investigates what drives digital nomads toward certain countries and cities, while also examining the socioeconomic impacts of digital nomadism on host communities, from local economic benefits to housing pressures and gentrification. By building a more systematic understanding of these patterns, the project aims to inform both theoretical frameworks and policy responses to this growing phenomenon.
